Climb Every Mountain

We attended a "Sound of Music" Sing-a-Long last weekend that was utterly delightful. It was part of the Deer Valley outdoor concert series, and we'd purchased a beautiful picnic basket to enjoy while sitting out on the lawn. It was a dark and stormy night, however, and hailing, too, so the event was moved at the last minute to the Eccles Center in Park City. It was charming, anyway. We watched the film on the big screen, enjoyed a costume contest (winner of 2013 season tickets: a nun holding a car distributor), ate well, and (naturally) sang along. Part of the fun was seeing that my girls knew all the words!

Each participant was given a little bag of goodies at the door. (EBH made good use of hers as headgear.) There was an invitation to the ball, and a swatch of green and white fabric, a sprig of edelweiss, some cards to hold up at the appropriate times (ie, the word flibbertigibbet), and a party popper to be used at the moment when Captain von Trapp kisses Maria in the glass gazebo. The event's hostess, dressed as Baroness Schraeder, instructed everyone to bark like a dog everytime Rolf came on screen, and to hiss at the Baroness. It was also funny every time someone let off a rogue party popper at unsanctioned moments -- like when Captain von Trapp looks longingly at Maria early in the film.

The event was attended by Heather Menzies Ulrich ("Louisa," left) and Kym Karath ("Gretl," right). They gave us some background information on their experiences, and also sold us a book. Because, even at $45 (!), we're suckers for those "scrapbook" books with pockets and envelopes and papers inside.

EBH is every bit as beautiful as Julie Andrews, and she's a constant singer, too!
