The Stourhead Gardens are a bit of a walk from the mansion itself. But see below--they are stunning! And the autumn colours were so vivid.
This cute little church-like cottage was one of several buildings in the garden that seemed to be merely for whimsical diversion. Now they serve hot chocolate and cakes in there, while you can stand in front of the open fireplace to warm yourself. E chose to stand outside instead and make faces.
One of the other "whimsical" buildings was a pantheon. What? Doesn't everyone have a pantheon in their back yard?
Behind the formal gardens at Stourhead was this equally charming little hill dotted with sheep.
The man-made lake is the central feature of the formal gardens, with everything scattered around the edges.
